Addiction? Maybe?

“You’d be required to take a blood sugar test to check why your prescription keeps changing” My optometrist broke the news to me.

I was petrified. I sat there transfixed as it seemed that suddenly all my sugar atrocities had metamophorsed into a monster and was scoffing at me with a huge smirk on the face.

“But what has blood sugar got to do with my eyes?” I asked as I suddenly found my voice.

“Blurred vision could just be a temporary problem that develops rapidly and is caused by high blood sugar levels. High blood sugar causes the lens of the eye to swell, which changes your ability to see.” I looked at him incredulously as he explained. “So we need to check your blood sugar, that might explain why we have to change your lens prescription for the third time within a year.

I sat there for what seemed like eternity as he wrote a referral letter to take to my GP for the test. And I was also silently praying that my blood sugar wasn’t the cause. You see, I had this “chronic” addiction to Coca-Cola. It was so bad that I’d wake up in the morning with a strong craving for it. And before the end of the day, I’d have had three bottles already. And all the warnings from different people at different times on the danger of consuming too much soft drinks fell on very deaf ears.

As the result of the test came out and was led to see the doctor, I felt like a sheep heading for a slaughter. And silently prayed that this cup would pass over me. I’m sure I even swore never to touch another bottle of Coca-Cola after that day!

“Your blood sugar level is very fine”, the doctor said to me as I broke into a huge grin and let out a sigh of relief. It was then I realized that I had been holding my breath. I did a quick victory dance in my head as I walked out of the hospital. That feeling was almost akin to winning a lottery.

I knew I needed to celebrate my victory. It was then I even realized that I was hungry. Luckily for me, there was a fast food restaurant some few blocks away from the hospital. I strolled down to grab a bite.

My first order was a bottle of Coca-Cola!
