A close shave….

Elizabeth looked confused as she made her way through the busy park. It had been eight long years since she last visited the park. And the memories it brought were not so pleasant. Filled with angst and trepidation, she looked at her wristwatch for the umpteenth time. Rick was twenty minutes late. She looked around the park to find a place to sit.

‘So much has changed here, she muttered to herself as she walked towards the sitting area in the park. She took out her phone from her handbag and dialed Rick’s number but there was no connection. She spotted a free seat and made her way towards it. As she sat down, she allowed her mind dart down memory lane. Her best friend, Arianna had been shot right in front of her in the park, by her ex-boyfriend, Sam. It was a difficult and sad period for her because she was made to testify against him. Sam was her co-worker. And an extremely nice one for that matter. She had been the one who introduced Arianna to Sam. No one could fathom how he had turned into a cold blooded murderer. He was sentenced to jail.

Recently she began to receive threat messages. And last week she learnt that Sam had escaped from jail. She panicked. And she made up her mind to get out of town. She had put up most of her belongings up for sale. That was when Rick called her. He wanted to take her apartment and they arranged to meet at the park. It sounded odd to her when he suggested the park but she shrugged it off.

Suddenly, she looked up and froze. It seemed that her greatest nightmare was coming to reality. She could recognize that gait even in her sleep! It was Michael! The stalker Michael! How could she have forgotten about Michael so soon? She had been so preoccupied with Sam’s escape that she had forgotten about Michael. Shortly after Sam had been convicted and sent to jail for Arianna’s murder, she realized she was being stalked. She would receive strange calls at odd hours as well as emails from an unknown email address. He graduated to sending flowers and empty boxes to her place of work and her home. He finally revealed himself and told her he first saw her on TV when Sam’s trial was aired. And that was were the obsession started.

Scared for her life, she got a restraining order and as expected, he violated it. He went to jail for that.

She stood up hurriedly and made a dash out of the park. She ran towards her car and tried to call 911 at the same time. She looked over her shoulder and noticed he was closing in on her. She panicked and slipped. Micheal had a smirk on his face as he walked up to her.

“You thought it was over yeah? Queen Elizabeth?? He said mockingly.”I have waited long for this moment for my dear”. He brought out a gun and pointed it at her.

“Micheal, please don’t do this. Please I beg you. I plan to move out of town. Let me just leave quietly” she pleaded.

“No!” He shrieked and pulled the trigger.

Elizabeth closed her eyes. She heard two gunshots. It was when she realized that she was still alive she opened her eyes, just in time to see Michael fall to the ground.

Panicking, she looked up and saw the police officer who shot him.

“You alright ma’am?” He asked.

She couldn’t find her voice so she nodded.

By then, other officers and paramedics had arrived. The officer led her away. But all she could think of at that moment was how she had been so close to death.
